The Beginning…
Kiwanis Club of Johor Bahru is celebrating its 40th anniversary in service as a non-profit organization since being registered with the Registrar of Societies on 24 April 1985 bearing the Registration No: 1642/85 (Johor).
- 26 October 1983 – An inaugural meeting was held and it was unanimously resolved to form the Kiwanis Club of Johor Bahru (Kelab Kiwanis Johor Bahru) with the adoption of its constitution and a pro-tem committee of 12 members was elected with Huang Yan Teo as the President.
- 1 November 1983 – The submission of documents to Registrar of Societies to form a service club commenced. After several meetings and discussions with the authority over a period of one year and six months, the Kiwanis Club of Johor Bahru (KCJB) was finally registered on 24 April 1985.
- 6 July 1985 – KCJB was officially accepted as an affiliated club of Kiwanis International sponsored by Kiwanis Club of Singapore and Kiwanis Club of Kuala Lumpur. KCJB was the second Kiwanis club formed in Malaysia ten years after Kiwanis Club of Kuala Lumpur. The nomination and election of officers and directors was conducted.
- 17 July 1985 – The first Directors Meeting was held where the Charter Night sub-committee was formed. The appointment of directors to head the respective portfolios and several community service projects were discussed.
- 7 August 1985 – The first Club Meeting was held at the Merlin Inn, Johor Bahru with an informative session on the meaning and origins of Kiwanis presented by Kiwanis Club of Singapore.
- 7 September 1985 – The first Community Service project was a visit to the Sinar Harapan Tampoi (Home for the mentally challenged children) to distribute gifts, food and T-shirts.
- 9 November 1985 – Our Chartered President, Kwn. Huang Yan Teo and the Board of Directors 1985/1986 were installed on the Charter Night of KCJB with a total membership of 25 members.
The Milestones…
KCJB has been actively involved in serving all sections of the community in Johor Bahru, Johor and especially to serve the ill, the maimed, the handicapped and the aged regardless of race, colour and religion in accordance with The Objects of Kiwanis International.
KCJB embarked on a long-term project in 1991 to serve the children with special needs, Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation– Johor Bahru Centre being the second centre in Malaysia.
KCJB has inspired many to join the Kiwanis family and had sponsored the formation of several other clubs in Johor such as Kiwanis Club of Johor Jaya, Kiwanis Club of Kluang, Kiwanis Club of Taman Sentosa, Kiwanis Club of Nusajaya and Kiwanis Club of Taman Pelangi, JB
KCJB has managed to encourage the youths’ participation from SMK IJ Convent, Johor Bahru and Foon Yew High School to form Key Clubs and Southern University College to form Circle K under the Kiwanis Service Leadership Programs.
